What is Love?

"Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more." -- sorry, broke out in song there...haha - I couldn't resist Haddaway and the hit song from 1993 - it's been in my head all night.

At youth group tonight we talked about the inevitable at this time of year - love - considering Valentine's day is on Monday.

A side note during the discussion on love came the topic of Valentine's day and how it is a man-made holiday (mostly made for consumerism). A question that came to my mind, as I contemplated Valentine's day and it's use (as we were discussing how we should show our love every day, not just on one day), was isn't it God that made love? If this is what we believe then if there was no God, there would be no love, and ultimately no Valentine's day. Ergo we should be celebrating with each other the love God has given us to show to one another.

Now, I'm not trying to downplay Valentine's day. I think it's great that there's a day to show your love to someone you care about, I just think that when people are getting wrapped up in showing love through presents it's a little much. But that's what our world is all about, consumerism. I don't need a diamond bracelet, I just want to feel appreciated and loved for who I am - however, that's not just a one day a year thing, that's an every day thing :P - and that's how we're born, with a need to feel loved.

So, what is love? Well - it's not easy to define and write out in words. And there are many different types of love too. Read the Bible and maybe you'll find out more. 1 Corinthians 13 is a good place to start.
